Frederick Albert Tilston 1906-1992

Tilston

Frederick Tilston led the men of C Company, the Essex Scottish, across 460 metres of open ground into German trenches on 1 March 1945 during the battle of the Hochwald in the Rhineland campaign. Although wounded, Tilston was the first man over the barbed wire fence and into the enemy positions. He destroyed one machine gun nest with grenades and pushed on. He re-crossed the open area several times to rally his company and to bring ammunition and grenades back to his men. Eventually he lost both his legs in the battle and was awarded the Victoria Cross.
