Robert Gray was from Nelson BC and was a pilot. On 9th August 1945, he participated in an attack against an enemy destroyer at Onagawa Wan, Japan. His airplane was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire, but Gray held his course and came within 50 feet of the ship before dropping his bombs. The destroyer sank but Gray was killed. Gray had previously been praised for his role in an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz, and won a Distinguished Service Cross for an earlier attack on a Japanese ship. Gray became the only member of the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II to win the Victoria Cross.
