Victoria Cross Cockburn

Hampden Zane Churchill Cockburn was born in Toronto Ontario and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Dragoons during the South African (Boer) War. He won the Victoria Cross on 7 November 1900 during fighting at Leliefontein on the Komati River. He was wounded and all his rear-guard party were killed or wounded but he held his ground, allowing the rest of a British column to escape. Following the battle, three men of the Royal Canadian Dragoons were awarded the Victoria Cross: Cockburn, Turner and Holland.
