Frederick Peters was a Canadian serving with the Royal Navy during the Allied landings on the North African Coast. On November 9, 1942, Captain Peters led the Walney into Oram Harbour during Operation Torch. The Walney and her sister ship the Hartland, were sunk by enemy shells. Peters was the only man on the bridge to survive and he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
