Andrew Mynarski was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was a pilot officer on a Lancaster bomber in No. 419 Squadron on 12 June 1944 during the Cambrai raid. The bomber was attacked by a night fighter and set on fire. Mynarski attempted to rescue the trapped rear gunner but his own clothing and parachute caught fire. He was not able to rescue the man but by the time he jumped he was badly burned. Mynarski died of his burns but the tail gunner survived. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
