Charles Merrit was commanding officer of the South Saskatchewan Regiment during the Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942. Despite serious wounds he continued to lead his men across the Scie River. Eighty-one men in the Regiment were killed and Merrit himself was taken prisoner. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for showing “reckless bravery”.
