David Ernest Hornell was an RCAF Flight Lieutenant and on anti-submarine patrol off Shetland Islands in his amphibious aircraft on 24 June 1944. When he spotted a U-boat he attacked and sank it with depth charges, although his own plane was badly hit. Hornell landed the plane in rough seas, and organized his crew to take turns in the one dinghy they had. The crew were rescued the next day but Hornell was exhausted and died soon after. He was awarded the Victoria Cross.
