Rev. Foote was the padre of the Royal Hamilton Light Infranty. He landed at the Dieppe Raid in August 1942. During eight hours on the beach, he tended the wounded, exposing himself to enemy fire throughout. He later left the landing craft that had come to rescue him and allowed himself to be taken prisoner so that he could continue to tend the wounded men of his regiment. He is the only Canadian chaplain to receive the Victoria Cross.
