Louis Joseph Papineau led the Parti Canadien, later called the Parti Patriote, forces for Lower Canada (present day Quebec) against the British. His peaceful attempts to force Britain into a more democratic government had failed and he concluded that an American-style revolution was required.
After several defeats, such as St. Denis and St. Charles, Papineau fled to the U.S.A. The Rebellion was over.
